Pantone's Color of the Year Takes Over

January 27, 2017

Out of the ground and into your shopping cart.

Every year, a small group gathers around a table — one mission in mind. They have journeyed into the world of fashion, product design, tech, and the cutting edge. Now after a long, thoughtful year . . . they are here to report back. Not on rising fashion talents or new smart devices — but color. Simply. These select few are trend forecasters for the Pantone Institute of Color, and together they will select the definitive "Color of the Year."

Greenery

This is the choice for 2017. "A fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature's greens revive, restore and renew." With a nod to the political climate, the color forecasters have made their pick. Now, Greenery winds upward like a climbing vine and demands to be noticed. Like a sneaky weed it has found its way into your shopping cart — and into your wardrobe as well. Call it accurate trend forecasting but greenery is sprouting up everywhere you look.

Greenery ≠ Recycling Bins

When we see a green product we are trained to immediately believe it is organic or biodegradable or made from sustainable hemp-something-or-other. No longer is Green siloed into this specific category. Just take a quick look at Pantone's color of the year video. Greenery looks rather like futuristic state of the environment. Geometric housing with squares of manicured lawn-patios — this is the future forecasted by trend, a fear of political turmoil, and hope for the earth itself. (According to Pantone). And I'm quite sure how I feel about it all, but then I suppose it's better than many alternatives.

Joining Team Green

Check out some of the products below that have embraced the color of the year (COTY). It's surprising how much you'll find in the kitchen and cleaning sections. The Kitchenaid shown below is one color in a new series of bright pastel options for the traditional mixer. Just another way customers can express themselves through their products. Even Nike has embraced greenery for one of their top selling co-ed smart watches. My smart watch is still last year's COTY of Rose Quartz. So maybe this year I'll make the switch to a Green Apple Watch.

Browse below and then let me know what greenery gadgets and products you've seen or purchased recently!

Do you have a strong opinion on this year's color? Should it have been something like "Greige" instead? Speak your mind in the comments below.
